I think Feministatsea is onto something. Anti-feminists think we're hysterical and paranoid if we do worry about these things, and then those same people will turn around and blame us if we don't worry and something happens, which is then Our Fault. The truth is that you can worry or not worry, and if someone chooses to commit an act of violence against you, that's their fault, not yours. You kind of reminded me of this post. And also this post. Maybe you'll find these helpful or relevant to the things you're thinking over.

It could have something to do with the fact that patriarchy blames you, if things should go wrong. So perhaps being careful has more to do with the fear that people will judge you than with the actual danger?

I honestly don’t know. Personally I feel that everyone should just be able to live their lives. If someone does decide to do something bad to you, can you really prevent it?

I know that thought sucks, but we don’t always have control over our situation, no matter how safe and preferred that is. Sometimes something bad will happen and you are not to blame and can’t stop it.

It’s entirely possible you find it awkward to ask somebody to stop because women in the patriarchy are conditioned to smile and be polite and to never ever cause trouble.

I was never very good at doing what people expected/trained/told me to do. Also, I’m a very confrontational person for the most part.

I love your story – told with such humour! It’s not just men that knee though, women do it too, and I find it so awkward asking whoever’s kneeing to stop. I don’t know why. Good on you for standing up for yourself and for being an impudent young girl

Fifty euro notes – or even twenties – are not popular for two reasons.

1) There is basically not enough small change in circulation.
2) The notes can be – and often are – forgeries – so need extra checking.

Had the knee in the back syndrome too (why is it always men?)

He spilled wine all over us it was that violent. Arse.

English on SleazyJet – probably down to the fact that it is an English company going to a destination full of ex-pats.

Interesting post though, enjoyed it. You need more long waits in Spanish bus stations.

I too have heard this use of babysitting and it makes me shudder. My partner also corrects it when people ask him if that is what he is doing. Looking after your own kids is definitely not babysitting. And absolutely Sioneve – being a Dad should and does involve washing and cooking and spending time with kids – these aren’t exclusively women’s work.

sounds as if he will not get a penalty. this is not uncommon in adelaide.

And to fathers and everybody else who refers to a father taking care of his kids as “Mr Mom”: STOP IT! A father looking after his kids, is NOT being Mr Mom! He is being DAD…so just let him. Parenting is NOT a female perogative.
