This is what happens when you have a war on drugs.
This 17 year old was more worried about the consequences of being caught with three tablets in her possession than she was about the effects taking all three at once would have. She died because we’d rather prosecute users than deal with the underlying social conditions that lead to drug use in the first place.
Now I’m not a drug user, for the record. I have friends that occasionally take ecstasy and I tend to avoid them when they’re high. I have the horribly uncool opinion that drugs are a stupid waste of time and money. But I don’t think users should be punished as harshly as they are. The article I’ve linked to contains a lot of useful information about the effect of ecstasy on the body and what makes it dangerous etc. This is the first time I’ve read this information, and I can’t help but think it may be something useful to teach people at some point. Possibly knowing that taking ecstasy in the heat is more likely to lead to death would help curb some of these deaths?
We need an entirely new attitude if we plan on stopping drug related deaths. Here’s hoping one day we’ll get a government that’s smart enough to deal with this appropriately.
