The government has recently (and maybe not so recently? I rarely watch TV so forgive me if I’m late on this one) released a series of ads containing public service announcements regarding drinking. They can be viewed online here.
Now if you follow that link, you’ll notice there’s an ad for under 18 and an ad for over 18, and both contain two perspectives, one male and one female. If you didn’t follow that link, you now have the same information because I just told you.
In the under 18 ad, why do they compare sex with death? And, more correctly, rape. It’s not consensual if you’re too drunk to consent. That girl is definitely too drunk to consent. But I did notice that there’s two people involved in the act, and apparently it’s only embarrassing for her. Now, if she’s not so drunk that it’s rape, or if he is also drunk and therefore neither is forcing the other, surely it’s either embarrassing for both of them, or neither of them? Of course not. It’s only bad for girls to have sex, men are studs for doing so. I’m so freaking sick of this damned assumption it’s not even funny. And if it truly is rape, which it appears to be given what we’re shown? It’s not embarrassing, and it’s not the fault of the girl who was drinking. Let me repeat this nice and loud for those who are still struggling with this idea:
IF YOU ARE RAPED WHEN DRUNK IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT FOR GETTING DRUNK. IT IS YOUR RAPIST’S FAULT FOR RAPING YOU. ALWAYS. NO EXCEPTIONS.
And fuck you to anyone who thinks differently. I don’t want to hear it, you are simply wrong. As much as I normally love debating and arguing, I will not stand it in this instance.
In this interpretation of the ad, the people taking photos and laughing are the bad ones. If you see this happening to someone too drunk to stop it, don’t laugh and take photos, STOP IT. Kick the arsehole in the balls and help the girl (if it is safe for you to do so of course).
I’m too angry now to dissect the other one and a half ads. Anyone want to take a stab at it in the comments for me?
